Licensing third-party content (like popular music for Songs) is an ongoing, evolving, and challenging process at Musora.
Recently, some Lifetime Members were unable to access certain content on the platform without a Musora+ subscription.
Understandably, this caused some frustration. So we wanted to give you more clarity on the topic.
Summary
There are two tiers of access at Musora: The Base Membership and Musora+.
The Base Membership includes first-party, wholly owned and proprietary Musora content. Musora+ includes everything in the Base Membership, as well as third-party content not fully owned by Musora.
Here's what's included in each tier:
| Musora (Base Membership) | Musora+ |
|---|---|
| The Method | Songs |
| Challenges | Song Tutorials |
| Courses | Drum Transcriptions |
| Workouts | Other licensed third-party content |
| Quick Tips | |
| Live Events | |
| New features and content created by Musora |
Our intent with Lifetime Memberships is, and always has been, to give students access to everything we create, fully own, and publish, now and in the future (the Base Membership).
And that’s still true! Anything that we create and own the rights to is available for Lifetime Members.
The team has also been working hard on improvements to the core platform, including new features, instruments, and content. When these are released, you’ll automatically be able to access them as part of your Lifetime Membership.
It’s important to know that third-party content may appear in certain videos or lessons across the platform. For example, a few Quick Tips contain licensed content, so they’re only available to students with Musora+.
Basically, if there’s third-party content in a specific lesson or video, only students with Musora+ will be able to access it. If there’s no third-party content, it’s available to everyone with a Base Membership.
There are costs associated with providing access to third-party licensed content, since we don’t own it.
And more often than you’d expect, content ownership actually changes hands, which requires new agreements to be made.
The Musora+ fee (over and above the one-time Base Lifetime Membership fee) compensates these third-party content owners for making their content available to our Musora+ students.
Yes, both today and in the future.
Working with third-party content owners makes Musora a better service for our students, even though it has its challenges. As long as the experience ends up being better for our students, we’ll figure it out.
But that also means there will continue to be changes as Musora evolves.
Third-party Drum Transcriptions and Pianote Song Tutorials have moved exclusively into Musora+.
To make the transition a bit easier, students with a Lifetime Membership are getting a free year of Musora+.
If you don’t have Musora+, you’ll get it for a year. If you’re currently paying for it, or if you received bonus access when you signed up, we’ll add an extra year.
This means you’ll have full access to everything in the Musora platform, including Drum Transcriptions and Song Tutorials, for the next 12 months.
You don’t have to do anything to claim that time – it’s already been added to your account.
If you want to keep enjoying Musora+ after the year is up, we are encouraging Lifetime Members to pay the optional $40/year fee to help make sure the music library keeps growing.
This fee goes towards paying third-party content owners and associated service costs, which has a huge impact on how much licensed content we can provide on the platform.
And for those who don’t wish to pay the yearly fee, we’ll also have an option to renew access on a monthly basis for free.
(if Musora+ isn’t for you, no worries. You’ll still get all of the fantastic content produced by our team.)
In the future, as third-party content ownership changes hands in the background, some stuff might be coming and going from Musora – just like shows on Netflix.
We’re putting a lot of thought and effort into how to communicate these things to students effectively. We want to make sure we’re giving as much advance notice as possible, while also respecting owners’ rights.
Our communications around these topics have been inconsistent. That’s 100% on us, and we’re sorry 😐.
We recognize we need to be better at explaining the different levels of access more clearly, and giving you a heads up when content is moving out of the platform for reasons beyond our control.
This is a new world for us, so we very much appreciate the patience you’ve shown us.
Feel free to reach out to support@musora.com if you have any questions or remaining frustrations, and we’ll do our best to take care of you.
Thank you for being a part of this incredible music journey. You’re a huge part of Musora’s story – past, present, and future. What we’re working on for 2026 is probably the most exciting stuff since Drumeo’s launch in 2012, and we can’t wait for you to see it.
